Support for Carers

People caring for people

Who is a Carer?

A carer is someone who provides unpaid care and support to a family member, friend, or neighbour who needs help. Carers can be of any age and may provide a variety of services, including:

  • Helping with everyday tasks, such as getting out of bed
  • Personal care, such as bathing
  • Emotional support, such as helping someone cope with mental illness symptoms
  • Taking them to appointments
  • Keeping them company when they feel lonely or anxious

Anyone can become a carer for someone suddenly or over time

Carers need their own wellbeing and welfare support

Many carers don't see themselves as carers. Caring responsibilities can have a negative impact on the physical and mental health, education, and employment potential of those who care.

Staff Carers Network - Here to support you

If you are carer, it's important that you have information on the support that is available to you as a carer. This is were the Trust's Staff Carers Network can help you.

The Network operates to represent, support and empower our staff who are also carers. They also aim to educate the hospital on how to best support their staff, represent staff carers in the creation of policy and to educate staff about what support exists for them and rights are entitled to.

Carers Cafe

Our 'Carers Cafe' is held every Thursday at 2:30pm - 4:00pm in Springs Restaurant (SDH Main Building, Level 2)

This is open to patients, visitors and all of our staff.

Staff Carers Network Meetings

The Network is not currently hosting any meetings, however you are welcome to drop into our weekly Carers Café down in Springs.
